The Benefits of Fish Oil for Dogs

This article is medically reviewed by Dr. Sarah Wilson, BScH, DVM, DACVIM (Nutrition).

Fish oil has become a popular supplement not only for humans but also for our four-legged friends! Derived from the tissues of oily fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines, fish oil is rich in essential omega-3 fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These nutrients offer a multitude of health benefits for dogs, backed by a growing body of scientific research.  We are proud to say that fish oil can be found in many of The Pets Table’s recipes. What is Fish Oil?

Fish oil is extracted from the tissues of certain types of fish known for their high fat content. The process typically involves the fish being cooked and then pressed to release the oil, which is then refined to remove impurities. The primary sources of fish oil include:

– Salmon: Known for its high omega-3 content, salmon is a common source of premium fish oil supplements.

– Mackerel: Another fatty fish that provides a rich supply of omega-3s.

– Sardines: These small fish are packed with omega-3s and are often used in high-quality fish oil products.

The Science

The benefits of fish oil for dogs stem from its high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These compounds play crucial roles in maintaining various bodily functions and promoting overall health.

  1. Anti-inflammatory Properties

One of the most well-documented benefits of omega-3 fatty acids is their anti-inflammatory effect. Inflammation is a natural response to injury or infection. However, chronic inflammation can lead to a range of health problems, including arthritis and skin conditions. Studies have shown that EPA and DHA can reduce the production of inflammatory compounds in the body, which may alleviate signs of arthritis and improve joint health in dogs.

  1. Skin and Coat Health

Omega-3 fatty acids also play a role in healthy skin and a shiny coat. Supplementation of EPA and DHA has been shown to improve haircoat quality by improving the skin coat barrier and improving the lipid content of hair shafts. As a result, the hair coat is soft and shiny, and the skin barrier is stronger, helping protect the dog, and may lead to less flaking, itchiness, and signs of discomfort.

  1. Cardiovascular Health

Just as in humans, omega-3 fatty acids contribute to cardiovascular health in dogs. Omega-3 fatty acids do not prevent heart disease through the same way they impact people though. Coronary artery disease is not something that occurs in dogs.  However, the benefits to heart health have been documented and omega-3 fatty acids are particularly beneficial. Supplementation has been shown to help reduce inflammation and can also help reduce muscle loss, also known as cachexia.

  1. Cognitive Function

DHA is a critical component of brain tissue and is essential for cognitive function. Studies have shown that puppies supplemented with DHA exhibit improved cognitive, memory, and learning abilities. In fact DHA is essential to growing puppies for mental development and visual acuity. In older dogs, DHA can help to slow the progression of cognitive decline, supporting overall mental health and vitality. The added benefit of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA have anti-inflammatory impact can further support cognitive function and may slow cognitive decline.

  1. Immune System Support

Omega-3 fatty acids are known to modulate the immune response, making them beneficial for dogs with allergies or autoimmune conditions. Through the anti-inflammatory impact of EPA and DHA, fish oil may help reduce severity of signs of a hypersensitivity reaction and further support a healthy immune response.

  1. Some is good. More doesn’t mean better!

Omega-3 fatty acids need to be given in appropriate amounts. When given in the right amounts they provide essential nutrients to support your dog’s health. However, when fed in excess, they can be harmful. Fish oils may also contain high levels of fat soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A and D, which if fed in high levels or to excess can be harmful or even fatal to dogs. Fish oils may also contain harmful heavy metal contaminants such as mercury or lead. When providing fish oil to dogs, whether in a treat, food, or supplement, it is important that a good quality fish oil is sourced, tested for harmful contaminants, and is used in proper amounts so as to provide the benefits without causing potential problems. Too much omega-3 fatty acids without the right amount of vitamin E can also be harmful to dogs. It’s best to be sure that the right amount is provided to your beloved furry family.

From being essential in growing puppies’ visual and mental development, to reducing inflammation and improving skin and coat quality, to supporting cardiovascular and cognitive function, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are essential for promoting overall wellness. With appropriate inclusion, fish oil can be a valuable addition to your dog’s health care routine, helping them lead a happier, healthier life.
